How to repair a leaded glass panel

We recently repaired and replaced a pane of stained glass. It was a repair of a window, and we use the traditional copper foil method developed in the period Tiffany Studios in 1900. So we mix two types of glass structure. The results were perfect.

A client called and asked us to repair a window in his house. The window had a piece of broken glass, and we must take from her home with us to repair, and install it in your foyer.

Once all the nails were cut pins, I was very careful to work the wood from the frame.

The panel was very narrow lead in the frame, which is rare, and I hadGently loosen the panel's work, not to worry. This installation was a piece of tempered glass on the outside of the door frame and then the glass art. In our study, we isolate the unit so that the window glass on both sides of tempered glass art.

As the ESG 5 is still in place, I simply replaced the pieces of wood in the new chassis, new installation at the site. Usually put a piece of cardboard or plastic into the opening while waiting for a replacement.

When I drive back to our studio, I initially followed the contours of the plate. I knew that from this window was so narrow that I have to be absolutely sure that does not grow on me was in the repair.

I heated the solder joints and a pair of pliers, the outside bar rocked back and forth, until the strip outside the zinc released from the panel.

With a razor blade, I scraped the concrete interface between the tip and the glass so you can remove the glassPieces.

After the cement has been dissolved by the glass, I was able to de-solder the joints and the work of lead from the glass.

Then I applied clear tape on both sides of the glass broken, so that, as I relaxed out the window, would be a piece that I could stay to be used as a model for the new replacement glass.

When I dissolved the concrete and glass from each other, if I applied a little pressure to the glass and spread it apart, so it was easy to removePanel.

I used the piece removed the cut-glass as a model for my spare parts. Since the glass was a close match, but not quite perfect, I replaced the two pieces so that both seemed the same way. Your eye would notice the difference when only one of the pieces has been replaced, but he could see little difference, since both have been replaced.

Then, down the plate nailed to the model I previously completed in order to ensure that the windows were the right size.

Then I pushed the two pieces of glass in leadership came spare.

I typed in a perfectly gentle pressure with a glass of a hammer.

Then I nailed the external cable, however, is ensure that the vessel was sealed and the patterns within the lines.

Up to this step, the techniques used are those that use a sheet of copper and a high level graphic artist. Since that time I focused on the copper foil method. I put a strip of copper foil alongthe bottom of the window, there is nothing to be welded. We could have used to run, but it was entering the field, we do not agree with the original cable.

I defeated the slope less than three pieces with copper foil, ready for welding of the plate.

I cut a piece of zinc on the panel fit and nailed into place, making sure that the disc still in the model to fit with the pencil.

I have carefully soldered joints on the bottom of the dish, with care, justHeat the lead which was attached as just enough to pay off, try to avoid the merger came.

When the welding was complete, they were a little 'too glossy to match the original window, so I cleaned with a mild ammonia, which is dark and then diluted to put down a layer of black paint.

After polishing and waxing of the window, she orders the original quite well.

When we came back, went into the house to install, clean my wife, JeanneWindow to get rid of dust and dirt clean.

I removed the molding that to work in temporary and some nails from the frame. Then I followed the example of Jeanne and polished the inside of the glass to eliminate dust that can be collected.

I used my paddle as a lever to the center of the window opening.

Then I applied a small amount of silicone around the entire structure.

I gently tapped the woodagain.

Then, because I was not the nail on the rear panel in place, I forced a stick into the opening between the forms so that they could be kept fixed, while the silicon is dry. The silicon forms a pretty good relationship with both the window and the molding to hold it in place.

A few simple steps later, we had to work with very satisfactory results were obtained.
